Trevor Wingrove would have been proud.
Twenty-four teams from across B.C. and Alberta descended on the Poirier Sports and Leisure Centre last Thursday to Sunday for the Trevor Wingrove Memorial Tournament, hosted by the Coquitlam Minor Lacrosse Association.
In the peewee division (ages 11 and 12) gold medal game, the home team Coquitlam Adanacs claimed the crown, after squeaking by the Juan de Fuca Whalers 4-3.
Christian Fitzgerald led the A's in scoring with three goals, while teammate Connor Dauncey banged in the winning goal.
In the bantam division (ages 13 and 14) final, the red-hot Poco Saints, who went 5-0 during the tournament, prevailed 8-6 over the Ridge Meadows Burrards. The Saints got a four-goal effort from Nico Pace, a pair from Mitch Bye and singles from Austin Wahl and Evan Wray.
In midget division (ages 15 and 16) action, the Maple Ridge Burrards and Coquitlam Adanacs battled neck-and-neck until the very end, when the Burrards broke away with three goals in the final four minutes to take down the home team by a score of 8-5.
Trevor Wingrove Inspirational Player Awards were presented in each of the three divisions, based on quality of play, sportsmanship and inspirational play to his or her teammates.
The 2014 winners were Christian Fitzgerald from Coquitlam in the peewee division, Brett Ginac from Port Coquitlam in the bantam division and Maple Ridge's Daylon Kellough in the midget division.
Wingrove played minor lacrosse in Coquitlam and was a star player for the Adanacs in the B.C. Junior 'A' Lacrosse League and the Western Lacrosse Association.
A high-ranking city manager with the City of Coquitlam, Wingrove passed away after a battle with cancer almost four years ago.
