Port Coquitlam’s Amira Brar scored a goal to help her York University Lions open their Ontario University Athletics women’s field hockey season with a 4-0 win over the McGill Martlets.

Brar, a Gleneagle secondary grad, is in her second year of a commerce program at York. She’s one of seven players from the Tri-Cities on the Lions, which are the defending OUA champions. Others are: fifth-year goaltender Alycia Gray, a Heritage Woods grad; Alyssa Brooks and Natalie Winter, freshman midfielders from Dr. Charles Best secondary; third-year defender Laura Touhey, another Best grad; third-year forward Haley Bannister, from Gleneagle; and sophomore defender Clare Heisler, from Heritage Woods.

The win over McGill extends an unbeaten string that included four victories and a tie during a pre-season exhibition swing through New York State, Massachusetts and New Hampshire.
