Transit sorry after mom kicked off bus

A B.C. Transit bus driver was expected to tell his side of the story after a woman complained that she and three children were ordered off a bus short of their destination.

The driver was reported to have told the woman that the children — her infant son and two other children — were making too much noise while travelling from Esquimalt to the University of Victoria on Tuesday.

The incident is “highly unusual,” said B.C. Transit spokeswoman Meribeth Burton on Thursday. Kicking people off buses is not in line with B.C. Transit policy. “We called the mom and apologized.”

The driver was to be interviewed at the end of his shift on Thursday, after which a report will be given to the passenger and a decision made on restitution.

B.C. Transit expects drivers encountering a similar problem with passengers to first call a supervisor, Burton said. “The transit supervisor determines which action to take,” she said. “We never abandon people.”
