A Coquitlam school trustee is seeking her third term on the board of education for School District 43.

Carol Cahoon, who is also the executive director of the Coquitlam Foundation, a local philanthropic organization, is running on a platform of fiscal accountability, equal representation and student achievement.

“I continue to love what I do in support of students, staff and the community,” she told the Tri-City News in a release.

“With my passion to give back, I have engaged with hundreds of SD43 colleagues and met thousands of students and parents while attending school and community events.”

A Tri-City resident for 26 years, Cahoon is currently serving as:

  • SD43 board vice chair
  • Audit and Finance Committee member
  • SD43 representative to the B.C. School Trustee Association’s (BCSTA) Finance and Audit Committee

Cahoon is also a past SD43 BC Public School Employers Association (BCPSEA) representative, and she regularly attends BCSTA Metro Board, Student Leadership Council and District Parent Advisory Council meetings.

If re-elected on Oct. 15, she pledges to keep schools safe, support staff and work closely with stakeholders to build a strong and stable environment for learners.

“Since 2014, I have worked hard to keep putting forward fresh energy, ideas and solutions,” Cahoon said.

“We have stabilized the budget, advanced funds to modernize, replace and upgrade facilities and are working to add needed child care spaces in the district. I hope to continue working with the other trustees to keep the board fiscally sound and committed to the education of all our students.”

Cahoon faces the following trustee candidates on the Coquitlam ballot:

  • Jennifer Blatherwick (incumbent)
  • Chuck Denison
  • Geoffrey Way
  • Daniel Westley
  • Belinda Wheatley
  • Craig Woods (incumbent)

Meanwhile, the Tri-City News will publish its VoteSmart guides for Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody on Thursday (Oct. 6) — in print and online.

The general election is on Saturday, Oct. 15.
