A 51-year-old New Westminster man was handed a sentence just shy of three years for robberies in the city, as well as in Coquitlam and Burnaby.

The New Westminster Police Department announced Thursday that Warren David Bonsell was convicted of two counts of robbery and one count of using an imitation firearm. The charges stem from incidents at four small businesses between Dec. 5, 2018 and Jan. 7, 2019, police said.

In a February 2019 news release, NWPD said investigators, along with the Lower Mainland emergency response team, raided Bonsell’s home on Jan. 29 following an “extensive investigation.”

Bonsell pleaded guilty to three charges on Oct. 9, according to Court Services Online, and he was sentenced to two years and nine months in jail on Nov. 27.

Along with the jail sentence, Bonsell was handed a lifetime firearms prohibition.

“A robbery can be a very troubling event that has an element of violence, which is of great concern to the public. The hard work and collaboration of New Westminster Police Department investigators and policing partners at Coquitlam and Burnaby RCMP detachments led to the successful arrest, charge and subsequent conviction of Mr. Bonsell,” said Sgt. Jeff Scott in a news release.

“We will continue to tirelessly investigate offences so that we can ensure our community is safe for everyone to enjoy.”
