PetSmart Charities of Canada is hosting National Adoption Week from July 11 to 17 across the country.

If you are looking to adopt pets this summer, this week may be the best time to do so, with it being National Adoption Week.

PetSmart locations across Canada are looking to help surrendered pets find their forever homes this week.

According to PetSmart Charities of Canada, about 100,000 pets enter shelters each year and the organization is looking to rehome 1,300 pets across the country during National Adoption Week (July 11 to 17) this year.

Families looking to adopt a pet at local PetSmart stores, including in Bridgeport in Richmond, can interact with pets from animal welfare organizations this week.

While all rescue pets are up for adoption, PetSmart Charities are encouraging adopters to consider bringing home a cat or kitten during “kitten season.”

Summer months are considered “kitten season” because animal shelters have more cats and kittens than there are normally.

Animal rescue organizations are seeing an extremely high number of kittens as traps, spay/neuter-and-release programs were paused during the COVID-19 pandemic, reads a PetSmart Charities statement.

“We recently achieved a milestone of 350,000 pet adoptions thanks to our wide network of local animal welfare organization partners and individual donors who generously give funds to our organization as they checkout in PetSmart stores,” said Aimee Gilbreath, president of PetSmart Charities of Canada.

“We look forward to bringing this momentum into National Adoption Week to pair even more pets in need with loving homes.”
