The Surrey RCMP says a Metro Vancouver road has been closed to traffic due to a plane that caught fire.

Police are warning the public of road closures along a busy Metro Vancouver street due to a fire.

Around 1:30 p.m. on Friday, June 2, the Surrey RCMP says a plane caught fire in "an Ultra-Light aviation field located in the 6900-block of 152 Street," according to a news release.

Firefighters are working to extinguish the blaze that spread to the surrounding grassy area and police remain at the scene.

One person was seriously injured and transported to hospital following the incident.

Police say 152 Street between 72 Avenue and 68 Avenue has been closed in both directions. Drivers should avoid the area and use alternate routes, as it is unknown how long the road closures will remain in effect.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
