Locals will be able to take flights from YVR in Vancouver to the YOW airport in Ottawa with Porter Airlines starting in July 2023.

Vancouverites looking to fly to Canada's capital city will have another direct option starting this summer.

Porter Airlines has announced a new non-stop route connecting Vancouver International Airport (YVR) with Ottawa International Airport (YOW), which is slated to commence service on July 26.

The airline has scheduled one daily round-trip flight, with the Vancouver flight departing at 7:45 a.m. and arriving in Ottawa at 4:03 p.m. In the other direction, the Ottawa flight is scheduled to depart at 6 p.m. and arrive in Vancouver at 7:37 p.m.

The new service will be operated with the 132-seat Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, which is considered the most environmentally-friendly single-aisle aircraft, at 65 per cent quieter and up to 25 per cent cleaner than previous-generation technology. It has the lowest fuel consumption per seat and per trip among 120 to 150-seat aircraft and is the quietest single-aisle jet flying today.

Travellers can book one-way tickets for the new route starting at $137.38 with the PorterClassic Basic Fare, which doesn't include carry-on luggage or flight changes; round-trip tickets start at $278.16 with the same fare class.

“Ottawa is positioned as a critical part of Porter’s growing North American network,” said Kevin Jackson, executive vice president and chief commercial officer, Porter Airlines, in a media release.

“We will continue building our presence in YOW and providing a superior level of service and travel options for economy travellers.”

The scheduled service will connect with Charlottetown, Halifax, Moncton, New York, Toronto-Pearson, Toronto-City, and Thunder Bay through Ottawa.

Porter Airlines ramps up Vancouver flights across Canada from YVR

Porter started its daily, non-stop service between Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) and YVR in February, marking the first time in the airline's 16-year history that it provided service to Western Canada.

The Toronto-based carrier says the new Ottawa-Vancouver route complements its existing service between Toronto-Pearson and Vancouver, with the latter’s summer schedule ramped up to five daily round trips.

Service features on this route include complimentary premium snacks, beer and wine served in glassware, and free, fast WiFi for all passengers. Fresh, healthy meals are also provided on an all-inclusive basis with PorterReserve fares or may be purchased à la carte for passengers travelling in PorterClassic.

The airline has also been attracting some attention from local travellers because of its adorable mascot: a black-and-white raccoon, aptly named Mr. Porter.
