The BC Conservation Officer Service (COS) is reminding the public to keep dogs on-leash after a coyote reportedly bit an off-leash dog in Whistler.
According to a notice shared by the Resort Municipality of Whistler on behalf of the COS, the incident occurred July 23 on the Hot Dog Alley mountain bike trail near Rainbow Park and the Stonebridge neighbourhood.
"The COS reminds dog owners to keep their dogs on a leash and avoid the Hot Dog Alley trail until the coyote family has left the area," the notice reads.
"Coyotes may become more aggressive towards people or pets at this time of year when when they are protecting dens or pups. Coyotes may follow or attempt to 'escort' you and your dog away from their pups. The public is advised to avoid the trail at this time to give the coyotes space."
If you encounter a coyote, the COS advises to stay calm; keep your dog on a leash by your side, and pick up any small children or dogs; maintain a safe distance and calmly back away from the coyote.
"The coyote will leave when you’re out of their territory. Don’t run. If a coyote gets too close, shout and wave your arms to scare it away," the notice reads.
"Keep your dog leashed on any trail because dogs can trigger defensive behaviour from wildlife."
