Despite full vaccination rates of 86%, B.C. hospitals are still seeing hundreds of seriously ill COVID-19 patients

Five British Columbians have died since yesterday from COVID-19, and there has been one new outbreak at a B.C. hospital -- Royal Inland Hospital in the Interior Health region.

Since yesterday, there have been 500 new active cases of COVID-19 infections, the provincial health office reports, bringing the total number of active cases in B.C. to 4,301.

The daily COVID-19 case count was delayed in coming out by several hours today, and there is no updated report on vaccination rates in B.C.

Of the 4,301 British Columbians currently infected with COVID-19, 426 are in hospital and 124 are in intensive care. People who are unvaccinated account for 69.7% of current hospitalizations.

Of the five deaths, three were in the Island Health region, and one each in the Fraser and Northern health regions.

There has been one new outbreak at a health care facility -- Royal Inland Hospital. There are now 33 health care or long-term, care facilities with active outbreaks in B.C.

Ongoing outbreaks in B.C. at long-term care facilities include:

  • Cherington Place, Queens Park Care Centre, Rosemary Heights Seniors Village, Tabor Home, Cascade Gardens, Maplewood House (Fraser Health);
  • Amica Lions Gate, Amica Edgemont (Vancouver Coastal Health);
  • Cottonwoods Care Centre, Village by the Station, Brocklehurst Gemstone Care Centre, Sun Pointe Village (Interior Health);
  • Peace Villa (Northern Health); and
  • Chartwell Malaspina Care Residence (Island Health).

Acute care facilities with outbreaks include:

  • Mission Memorial Hospital, Queen’s Park Care Centre, Abbotsford Regional Hospital, Burnaby Hospital (Fraser Health);
  • Royal Inland Hospital (Interior Health);
  • University Hospital of Northern BC, GR Baker Memorial Hospital, Bulkley Valley District Hospital (Northern Health); and
  • Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (Island Health)

All outbreaks in assisted living facilities are in the Fraser Health region: The Emerald at Elim Village, Swedish Assisted Living Residence, Harrison Pointe, Pacific Carlton Seniors Community, Tabor Manor, The Cedars, Hallmark on the Lake, Hallmark on the Park, Bethshan Gardens and Revera Parkwood Manor.
