While her big sister is in Oliver at Stanley Park this summer, Port Moody actor Jaime MacLean will be on the other end of town for a different musical.

The nine-year-old Aspenwood elementary student will appear as Young Cosette in the Arts Club Theatre production of Les Misérables, which officially opens Wednesday at the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage.

MacLean told The Tri-City News she jumped at the chance to audition for the role after seeing the movie version. "I saw it and I wanted to be her," she said.

MacLean is one of 12 in the main cast that includes Kieran Murphy as Jean Valjean, Warren Kimmel as Javert, Jennie Neumann as Éponine and Rebecca Talbot as Fantine. "The show is really fun because I get to work with other people who have done it before," she said. "They're really, really good."

MacLean, who takes nine classes at the Lindbjerg Academy for the Performing Arts in Coquitlam (where her sister, Julia, also trains), will keep a tight summer schedule for her Arts Club debut: She's in eight shows a week with Les Miz.

Still, the bright lights are nothing new. MacLean played Molly in Annie for the 25th anniversary production of the Royal City Musical Theatre (with Julia as the star) as well as a dancing rat in Shrek for the award-winning Align Entertainment company. She has appeared in television commercials (Mattel, Crayola, Volvo) and was recently cast as Dianah in the YTV hit show Some Assembly Required.

Next up, MacLean will be a party girl in the upcoming The Nutcracker (Goh Ballet).
