Vancouver now has a comprehensive map of everywhere the public can hang a hammock between two trees.
Local software developer Adam Atbi came up with the idea when he was looking for a spot to hang out.
"I was swinging in a hammock after looking for a good location for a little while," Atbi tells V.I.A.
In order to avoid the problem in the future, Atbi decided to figure out every place to hang a hammock in the city.
He turned to the City of Vancouver's data portal for help.
"I remembered they had a dataset of the location of all the trees in Vancouver," he explains.
He downloaded the data and parsed it (well, got a computer to do it), seeking trees that were six inches to two-and-a-half- feet in diameter and three to six metres apart.
In all, 2,645 locations popped up.
Then he put all those locations on a map.
"It only took an hour or two," he says.
He's used the map a couple of times himself and even found his hangout spot where he had the idea on the map.
That said, he's not planning on a comprehensive rating list of all the spots.
"That would definitely take a few years, I don't know about that," he says.
However, he's made it public in case others want to find a place to hang a hammock.
Atbi's favourite hammock spot? "It's Harbour Green Park," says Atbi. "It's a great view."
