Metro Vancouver's forecast for mid to late May will continue the streak of moderate weather.
Showers, clouds, and some blue skies are all part of the week's forecast, says Environment Canada meteorologist Morgen Shull, with Tuesday, May 20, repeating much of what was seen on Monday due to a trough of low pressure nearby.
"It's a very similar pattern for tomorrow," she says. "Just because of how today lightened up in the afternoon."
Overnight and morning showers will bring up to 10 mm of precipitation to most of Metro Vancouver, with North Vancouver areas potentially getting up to 15 mm by the end of the morning.
Things will likely clear up in the afternoon with a mix of sun and cloud, but Shull notes there's a slim possibility of lightning in the Lower Mainland.
Thunder and lightning?
"It's a low risk right now, but it might be added in," she explains.
Typically, thunderstorms are more likely in the late afternoon, Shull adds, but due to the instability in the atmosphere, lightning strikes could happen any time on Monday.
"Honestly, I would say anytime between morning to mid-afternoon," she says. "But it could be almost any time tomorrow."
It might only be one or two strikes, she adds.
"Right now it's there, but it's quite slight," Shull says. "Over the mountains is more likely."
If there is any lightning on Tuesday, it's likely the most dramatic weather in the foreseeable future for Vancouver.
Weak ridge keeps things drier
A weak ridge of high pressure forming off the coast will push the current trough away on Wednesday, though there could be some early morning showers.
Once that ridge is in place, things should clear up with a mix of sun and cloud for the rest of Wednesday.
That'll continue into Thursday, which will likely be the sunniest day of the week.
A "disturbance" arrives
"Friday, we have another disturbance moving off the coast," says Shull. "It's not heading straight into the lower mainland, but it is going to brush past us."
Heavy rain isn't expected with the disturbance, but showers and grey skies are.
"Those showers are expected to continue through Saturday morning, and then by Saturday afternoon, we should start seeing that precipitation drying up."
Temperatures for the week
While the weather will be a bit back and forth, temperatures will be relatively stable through the week until the weekend.
Tuesday will be the coolest day of the week, with a high of 14 C forecast. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday are all expected to be similar, with highs on the shore around 16 C and 17 C (inland they're expected to be a couple of degrees warmer).
The weekend could heat up, though, with highs of 19 C expected on Saturday (despite the early morning rain) and up to 22 C on the beach on Sunday.
"Sunday looks like the warmest day of the week," Shull says.
