'Gift economy' the topic tomorrow at the Gallery

Is it truly better to give than receive?

You can ponder that tomorrow in a talk about the "gift economy" tomorrow (Sept. 18) at the Tri-City Greendrinks meeting at the Gallery Bistro in Port Moody.

According to a Greendrinks press release, the gift economy is based on the premise that transactions involving money separate people and preempt any relationship between buyer and seller; i.e., I give you something, you give me money, end of story. But in a gift economy, I give you something and you are grateful. You start thinking about ways you can help me or, maybe, you pay the gift forward to someone else - and relationships form and communities grow.

Peter Endisch is a local environmental activist and a believer in paying it forward who is passionate about the gift economy model and is on the journey learning how to shed materialism and be truly part of the "new" economy.

The Tri-City Greendrinks session runs from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Gallery, located at 2411 Clarke St. in Port Moody. For more information, visit www.meetup.com/tricity-greendrinks. (And note that Greendrinks events are scent-free.)
