It was messy, loud and fun, but most importantly, Friday's science lab in the Hillcrest middle school gym was a giant learning experience.
The school participated in an international effort to set a Guinness world record for the largest practical science lab. Hillcrest was among several School District 43 schools participating.
At Hillcrest, students were grouped in teams and wore brightly-coloured clothes to do two science experiments that took about 30 minutes.
In one, they made a water mister using a glass of water and two straws, in another, they made two balloons touch each other by blowing a steady stream of air.
The goal, principal Nadine Tambellini said, was to get students involved in science and to teach them about fluid dynamics during National Science and Technology Week. She praised teacher Rose Ngo for organizing the event that involved all 295 students. "She's very enthusiastic and she inspires the school," Tambellini said.
Other local schools that participated were Citadel, Hillcrest, Moody, PItt River, Scott Creek middle schools and Harbourview elementary.
