Beyond spanking: seminar looks at discipline

Children are always testing their boundaries and it's up to parents to deal with the situations as they arise. But what is the best way to discipline and what does the word even mean? Those questions and more will be answered on Nov.

Children are always testing their boundaries and it's up to parents to deal with the situations as they arise.

But what is the best way to discipline and what does the word even mean?

Those questions and more will be answered on Nov. 20 when the Southside Family of Schools hosts its first presentation of the school year at Riverside secondary in Port Coquitlam.

Christopher Bert, a parenting and family development specialist, will provide an in-depth look at how discipline impacts children's behavioral choices. The discussion will range from theoretical concepts of power and control to practical examples of choosing effective consequences for common issues and behavioral challenges. As well parents will learn alternatives to typical punishments.

The seminar will be held at Riverside secondary school from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $5 per couple and $3 per single.

Light refreshment and free child minding is available.

Advance registration is required.

To register, email [email protected] by Nov. 13 and include the following information in your email: number of people attending, telephone number and number and age of children requiring child-minding.

Payments will be taken at check-in at the seminar. Please arrive early as line-ups can be long. Cheques can be made payable to SFSPE or Southside Family of Schools Parent Education. Walk-in registrations will be accepted only if there is space available.
