Wood carver Michel Campeau started his chainsaw in the Nelson Street parking lot of Coquitlam's Mackin Park this week.
The Quebec native is sculpting an eight-foot tall cedar log - pulled from a river and dried out - into the shape of a lumberjack in honour of the city's annual Festival du Bois, which happens this weekend.
The public art piece, which is expected to be finished Sunday, will be permanently placed at the Maillardville park to recognize the neighbourhood's French-Canadian heritage.
Maillardville was formed more than a century ago when Quebecois pioneers worked at Fraser Mills, once the largest sawmill in the British Commonwealth.
