Residents of Como Lake Gardens in Coquitlam are celebrating a milestone today, Friday.
This morning, together with dignitaries from the provincial government, the YWCA and the City of Coquitlam, they will be celebrating the opening of the 30-unit four-storey building for women and children at 528 Como Lake Ave.
Designed to meet LEED (Leadership in Environmental Design) gold standards and incorporating "green-friendly" features, Como Lake Gardens was built on city land leased to the YWCA for 60 years at a rate of $1 a year. The provincial government provided $7.3 million for the project while YWCA pitched in $1 million.
Rent is based on 30% of the mother's income and a community development worker will be on site four days a week to help parents connect with YWCA services as well as services such as education and daycare in the area.
Among those attending the event will be Coquitlam Mayor Richard Steward and MLA for Coquitlam-Burke Mountain Douglas Horne.
The women moved in earlier this year.
