Coquitlam Crunch Challenge hike set for Sept. 8

Tri-City residents are once again being challenged to walk, run or stroll up the popular Coquitlam Crunch hiking trail Saturday in the third annual Coquitlam Crunch Challenge.

Tri-City residents are once again being challenged to walk, run or stroll up the popular Coquitlam Crunch hiking trail Saturday in the third annual Coquitlam Crunch Challenge.

The purpose of the Coquitlam Crunch Challenge: Embracing Diversity is to raise money for a Diversity Fund with the Coquitlam Foundation for initiatives that embrace diversity in Coquitlam. Through the Coquitlam Foundation, the fund would provide community grants to organizations and schools that undertake projects that promote diversity awareness, respect and integration for any one of the eight diversity dimensions: ages, faiths, cultures, sexual orientation, mental and physical abilities, gender, socio-economic level and ethnicity.

The walk begins in the lacrosse box parking lot beside Scott Creek middle school at an elevation of 33 m and goes up a well-marked gravel trail that accommodates the sure-footed hiker up the initial steep section of the trail to an elevation of 134 m, eventually reaching Bramble Park - with tennis courts, sports fields and washroom facilities - before finishing at Eagle Mountain Drive - a total elevation gain of 250 m from the starting point.

There are two categories of entry:

Make it or Break It starts at 6:30 a.m. and finishes at 6:30 p.m., with entrants aiming to walk the entire trail 10 times or more over the 12-hour period;

family recreational category goes from 10 a.m. to noon, walking the entire trail at least once.

The suggested donation from entrants is $20 for adults and $10 for youths.
