Hundreds of School District 43 high school students will be learning about the holocaust and how lessons of history can inform the future on Nov. 7 at Coquitlam Alliance Church.

This will be the fifth year Social Justice and English teacher Ken Ipe has organized a symposium on the holocaust, which is expected to draw students from Port Moody, Gleneagle, Heritage Woods, Pinetree, Terry Fox, Dr. Charles Best, Riverside, Centennial and Arch Bishop Carney secondary schools.

The keynote speaker will be David Ehrlich, a carpenter, whose skills helped him survive Auschwitz. He came to Canada as a war orphan in 1947 after surviving a three-day death march to Mauthausen and Melk death camps.

Students will also hear a challenge to "Make a Difference" from Port Moody students and take part in a candle lighting ceremony in remembrance of victims of the holocaust.

The event is presented in partnership with the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre.
