Coquitlam student needs votes for his cause

Andrew Teel needs online votes to win $25,000 for Covenant House
Andrew Teel is seeking online votes for his bid to raise funds for Covenant House.

Sometimes, all it takes is a hug — now a Coquitlam high school student who knows that better than anyone needs your vote.

Andrew Teel was a foster child of five when he asked a woman at his Tri-City school for a hug. A year later, she had adopted him.

More recently, the Grade 10 student in School District 43's Inquiry Hub has been attracting attention and support for raising more than $49,000 for Covenant House in Vancouver, a sum that was tripled by private sponsors.
Now, he has a chance to boost the donation by another $25,000 through the MLS MVP contest.

Teel has been nominated by the Vancouver Whitecaps FC of Major League Soccer to represent the club in Chicago at the MLS All Star Game on Aug. 2. He’ll be competing with other representatives and the winner with the most online votes will win $25,000 for their charities.

“We are really hoping it can be us that brings home the $25,000,” Teel stated in a note posted to the Inquiry Hub website. “I am so passionate about supporting the youth still out there and giving them a day that will change their lives, too.”
Covenant House supports youth living on the street in Vancouver with shelter beds, street outreach and life skills programs.
