Healthy aging is important for everyone, according to the Alzheimer Society of BC. "And it is essential not to forget the health of your brain as well," says Dorothy Leclair, the society's support and education coordinator for the North Fraser.

Healthy aging is important for everyone, according to the Alzheimer Society of BC.

"And it is essential not to forget the health of your brain as well," says Dorothy Leclair, the society's support and education coordinator for the North Fraser.

To help Coquitlam residents live well with the issues of aging and dementia, the society will run a pair of informational workshops this month.

Heads Up: An Introduction to Brain Health will be held Nov. 21 and will stress the importance of actively protecting and maintaining good brain health, offering practical strategies and goals for improving the health of your mind, body and spirit. Anyone interested in brain health is welcome to attend, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Lemon Tree Room at Coquitlam's Glen Pine Pavilion, 1200 Glen Pine Crt.

The next night, Nov. 22, the workshop Transition to Residential Care will help family caregivers who are considering residential care options for a person with dementia. Information will be provided on how to access residential care in the community, as well as a review of some important considerations when choosing a facility, Leclair says. "We will also explore the challenges families face when making decisions about residential care, and review some strategies for preparing for the transition." It runs from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Dogwood Pavilion, 624 Poirier St., Coquitlam.

Pre-registration is required for both workshops. To register, call Leclair at 604-298-0780 or email [email protected].
