SFU Philosophers Café is hosting a pair of events in December:
COQUITLAM
On Dec. 13, Coquitlam Public Library's Poirier branch hosts a discussion on the rising costs of health care and our aging society. The café's moderator, Amir Kamyabnejad, an SFU biomedical engineering MA student, wonders what will some of the consequences be of an aging population and how should we deal with it? The session starts at 7 p.m. The library is located at 575 Poirier St.
POCO
On Dec. 17, the Gathering Place in PoCo's Leigh Square Community Arts Village is the site of a session on "Science and religion: An unholy alliance?" Many people believe science and religion occupy two separate worlds and that never the twain shall meet, yet they both claim to be the truth, according to a café press release. How do we honour the claims of both science and religion?, asks moderator Graham Forst, who taught philosophy and English at the university level for many years and has published widely on the subject of literary criticism. Can and should they both play a part in modern life? Has science cancelled religion? The session starts at 7 p.m. the Gathering Place is located at 1100-2253 Leigh Square Pl., behind PoCo city hall.
With either Philosopher's Café, admission is free and everyone is welcome, and neither registration and experience are required.
