Disciplining kids the topic of Nov. 20 talk

Children are always testing their boundaries and it's up to parents to deal with the situations as they arise. But what is the best way to discipline and what does the word mean? Those questions and more will be answered on Nov.

Children are always testing their boundaries and it's up to parents to deal with the situations as they arise. But what is the best way to discipline and what does the word mean?

Those questions and more will be answered on Nov. 20 when Port Coquitlam's Southside Family of Schools hosts its first presentation of the school year at Riverside secondary.

Christopher Bert, a parenting and family development specialist, will provide an in-depth look at how discipline affects children's behavioural choices. The discussion will range from theoretical concepts of power and control to practical examples of choosing effective consequences for common issues and behavioural challenges. As well, parents will learn alternatives to typical punishments.

The seminar will be held at Riverside secondary school from 6:45 to 8:30 p.m. The cost is $5 per couple or $3 per individual. Light refreshments and free child minding are available.

Advance registration is required. To register, email [email protected] by Nov. 13 and include the following information in your email: number of people attending, telephone number and number and age of children requiring child-minding.

Payments will be taken at check-in at the seminar. Participants are urged to arrive early as line-ups can be long.

Walk-in registrations will be accepted only if there is space available.
