Coquitlam Public Library is on the hunt for interesting people with interesting stories to share.

Coquitlam Public Library is on the hunt for interesting people with interesting stories to share.

In partnership with Douglas College, Living Books is part of Coquitlam Public Library's Living Library program and provides patrons with one-on-one conversations with experts in a variety of subjects who are willing to share their knowledge and their stories.

"We've had some amazing people over the years come talk about their amazing life experiences," said community services librarian Teresa Rehman. "There are many interesting people who want to share their stories and we're looking for more of them now."

Often occupational, racial, religious or lifestyle labels are discussed and explored, including dealing with deep and controversial issues such as bullying, suicide and serious crime.

Designed largely to battle prejudice, the Living Library program through "books" who agree to be loaned out, invites all walks of life to join and encourages them to probe to beneath the surface to talk about real issues, rather than dwelling on stereotypes.

CPL patrons register to speak to Living Books of their choice and engage in one-on-one conversations with them for 20-minute sessions.

"It's amazing what a person can learn about another and a specific topic in that period of time," Rehman said.

The next Living Library Program at the new City Centre library branch is scheduled for Saturday, May 25.

Those who would like to volunteer as Living Books are invited to call Rehman at 604-937-4140, Local 234.
