A group working together to promote environmental sustainability in the Coquitlam River watershed has invited a noted author to speak on building community resiliency in the face of global change.
Tomorrow (Thursday), Michael Lewis will offer insights from his new book in a talk titled "Global Unraveling: Pathways to Resilience Close to Home;" the event starts at 7 p.m. in the Gathering Place (1100-2253 Leigh Sq.) in Port Coquitlam. Following his presentation, audience members will be invited to participate in a discussion.
The presentation is the first in a series of watershed cafés' organized by the Coquitlam River Watershed Roundtable to talk about important issues facing communities bordering the river.
Lewis founded an organization called the Canadian Centre for Community Renewal and recently coauthored a book with U.K.-based author Pat Conaty called The Resilience Imperative: Cooperative Transitions to a Steady State Economy.
According to Lewis, climate change, fossil-fuel dependence and globalization make economies "very vulnerable to unraveling" and communities will have to figure out ways to meet basic needs on a more local and regional basis.
