You can help make the local salmon population sustainable by joining the Hyde Creek Watershed Society in its annual release of coho smolts into the Port Coquitlam creek.

The annual event takes place Saturday, April 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Members have spent 18 months raising coho from eggs through to fry and smolt stages and these coho are now ready to travel to the ocean. Participants will carry a bucket of salmon from the hatchery to the creek and then release them for their journey.

There will also be an opportunity to visit the education centre and have a tour with one of the volunteer members. Exhibits and crafts are part of the day, along with a fundraising hot dog barbecue sponsored by Coopers Foods and Save-On Foods stores in Port Coquitlam.

The education centre and hatchery is located at 3636 Coast Meridian Rd. (at Patricia Avenue). Parking is available at the Hyde Creek rec centre on Laurier Avenue and it's a short walk west along the Traboulay PoCo Trail to the hatchery.
