A special walk-and-talk at Colony Farms Aug. 9 will show what plants need to be grown to attract wild pollinators.

Ecologist Elizabeth Elle will lead the excursion at Colony Farm Community Gardens from 7 to 9 p.m. and be on the lookout for varieties of pollinators in nearby gardens, fields and hedgerows. She will help participants learn what pollinators find attractive and why, and explore the importance of biodiversity.

About 75% of all foods grown on Earth require insect pollination. In addition to the mostly unexplained global occurrence of beehive collapse disorder, wild pollinators are also declining in number as they suffer from introduced pests and diseases, and use of chemical pesticides.

Meet at the pagoda just off the south parking lot on Colony Farm Road. The event will be cancelled if it rains. For more information visit cfcg.ca or call 604-936-7423.
