New school and a new identity

Students and staff at James Park elementary school won't be moving into their newly constructed building until September but the excitement is already in the air.

Much work needs to be done before the historic Port Coquitlam school that first opened in 1913 is replaced by the state-of-the-art, energy smart building, and one of the most important tasks is coming up with a new identity fitting for a 21st-century school.

Last Friday, James park students got a chance to take part in a POP! (Pursuing Our Potential) rally and brainstorming session for a new mission statement that will set the tone for the replacement school.

About 80 staff members and parents worked with 300 kindergarten to Grade 5 students to answer the question "What makes you feel safe, cared for and ready to learn?" said principal Petra Kintzinger.

"We're looking to create a shiny, new identity," she explained.

Information from the brainstorming will be gathered into themes and whittled down by students at upcoming assemblies. The result will be a new logo, updated colours and a statement of the school's values as friends and learners in the community.

"It's a kickstart to the moving process," Kintzinger said.

The new building is starting to take shape immediately next to the older school and students and teachers will likely move next door a few weeks after school-reopens in September.

It is expected to achieve LEED (Leadership in Environmental Design) Gold standard or the equivalent and will house a neighbourhood learning centre for community agencies.

Many students say they are looking forward to the move, although some of the Grade 5 students will be moving on to middle school next year. Kendra Seguin and Hudson McManus both said they expect the new school will have more space and look nicer, and they hope to return for a visit.
