Registration is open for a big charity event next month for animal lovers.

You can sign up now for the 2012 Scotiabank and BC SPCA Paws for a Cause walk and, according to an SPCA press release, "become a pawesome supporter" of the group.

Animal lovers across the province are gearing up for the SPCA's signature event, being held Sept. 9 in 35 communities throughout British Columbia, including Coquitlam.

"We are so grateful to all our supporters... Paws for a Cause is our biggest fundraising event of the year and our branches are reliant on the life-saving funds our participants raise," said Farrah Rooney, manager of fundraising events for BC SPCA, which this year hopes to raise $1 million for B.C.'s most vulnerable animals. "Participating in Paws for a Cause is a fun way to make a difference in your community. Our events are a true celebration of animals and feature all kinds of activities for the whole family."

Those interested in getting involved in the Paws for a Cause may join as an individual, as a group or as a corporate team. Registrants are all eligible for local and provincial prizes, and participants who raise $500 in June will receive a free SPCA hoodie.

The Coquitlam walk starts at noon on Sunday, Sept. 9 at Lafarge Lake, in Town Centre Park.

Prospective participants should visit spca.bc.ca/walk for information on sponsorship opportunities and fundraising ideas, as well as pledge kits, posters and volunteer opportunities.

The BC SPCA is a non-profit organization funded primarily by donations. Its mission is to prevent cruelty and to promote the welfare of animals through a wide range of services, including cruelty investigations, emergency rescue and treatment, sheltering and adoption of homeless and abused animals, humane education, advocacy, farm animal welfare, spay/neuter programs, and wildlife rescue and rehabilitation.
