Popsicle bridge building contest will be held at Douglas College

Building a bridge with Popsicle sticks is one thing, building one that's strong is a challenge dozens of children across the Tri-Cities are attempting.

As part of National Engineering and Geoscience Month, the Tri-Cities chapter of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (APEGBC) is partnering with Douglas College to host a Popsicle stick bridge building contest for students in Grades 3 to 8 next week at the David Lam campus.

Students will work individually or in teams to create bridges using a kit that contains 150 Popsicle sticks, one bottle of glue, one piece of construction paper and one sheet of letter-sized paper.

Nakul Verma, a physics instructor at Douglas, says the partnership with APEGBC is "part of our ongoing focus to promote STEM education [science, technology, engineering and mathematics] and we invite one and all to come and watch as our brave contestants test the strength of their creations."

He said the contest showcases the many ways engineering and geoscience relate to our everyday lives and is an opportunity for students to explore how science and creativity can combine to solve everyday problems.

The contest runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, March 28. Douglas College is located at 1250 Pinetree Way in Coquitlam. For more information, contact Douglas' Hazel Postma at 604-777-6173 or [email protected].
