Port Moody centennial stands test of time

Port Moody's centennial celebrations have created a legacy that will likely still be felt when the city celebrates its 125 birthday. A time capsule was sealed at Tuesday's council meeting that will be opened on Dec. 10, 2038.

Port Moody's centennial celebrations have created a legacy that will likely still be felt when the city celebrates its 125 birthday.

A time capsule was sealed at Tuesday's council meeting that will be opened on Dec. 10, 2038.

"While the focus was on items to celebrate centennial year, the commission recognized there hasn't been a time capsule that captured first hundred years," said Coun. Diana Dilworth, who chairs the city's heritage commission.

That led to the inclusion of items such as an old spoon, collectible pins dating back 75 years and a bottle of Crown Royal, the nickname of one of the city's famed women of ill repute whose favours could be bought for a bottle of the Canadian whisky.

City staff also got in on the act, submitting freeze-dried seeds and berries along with lists of at-risk animal and plant species.

"So that, in 25 years from now, we can look to see if there's been any change in those," said Dilworth.

The capsule will also contain a list of the city's centennial babies, family photos and predictions from community members as well as a few surprises.

The capsule will be stored in a glass display case at the Inlet Theatre. Dilworth said it was decided to preserve the capsule for 25 years so that many of those involved in Port Moody's centennial "will be around to help bring that excitement back to the time capsule when it's opened."
