Members of Port Moody council, PoMo Fire Rescue Deputy Chief Gord Parker and a Firefighters Without Borders representative show off the 1987 fire truck bound for Lima, Peru.

Firefighters in Lima, Peru will get their equipment beefed up a bit when a "new" fire truck arrives from Port Moody.

After using the 1987 Mack/Anderson pumper truck for 25 years, Port Moody Fire Rescue is donating it to Firefighters Without Borders Canada, which will stickhandle the shipment to South America.

"It's one of the better trucks we've had over the years," said Deputy Chief Gord Parker. "It's got the capacity of some of the bigger ones but it's a smaller truck, which made it really nice to be able to fit into tight spots but it still has lots of power, lots of pumping capacity."

Like any old truck, it needs to be serviced, Parker said, but the pumping apparatus is in fine condition and working as well as it did nearly 30 years ago.

It's not the first donation PoMo has made to Firefighters Without Borders. Previous donations include a 1989 GMC/Isuzu rescue truck and other equipment that was shipped in January 2011 and continues to serve as a command unit in central Lima. Additional equipment has been donated in each of the past five years.
