A workshop on building homes for some of nature's busiest tiny workers will be held at Port Moody Farmers Market on Sunday.

Veronica Wahl, from the Institute of Urban Ecology (IUE) at Douglas College will be leading the workshop on mason bees. The goal of the project is to engage community volunteers in learning the ecology of urban gardens with a focus on beneficial garden insects, which include pest hunters, pollinators, butterflies and hummingbirds. Various bee populations are in danger of extinction so a major part of the workshop will be about learning how to make small nests in which bees may safely lay and hatch eggs.

The March 22 workshop will supply all the materials to build the nests and ideas for providing ideal habitats will be discussed. Registration for the workshop can be made online at eventbrite.ca (search: "mason bee workshop"). There is a $10 charge to join the workshop but participants will receive $10 in market coins to spend at any of the 40-plus vendors at the Port Moody Farmers Market.
