Port Moody Fire Rescue is kicking off Emergency Preparedness Week on May 1 by expanding its home safety program to include all PoMo households.
The one-year pilot is aimed at ensuring homes have functioning smoke alarms and to eliminate fire hazards.
Since the program's launch in February, the department performed 25 inspections, installed 21 smoke alarms and replaced batteries in five.
It was initially targeted at PoMo seniors, the disabled and those at risk but is now open to all residents, including property owners and renters.
During the inspections, a firefighter will make cooking safety recommendations, check for safe use of electrical devices, including extension cords and power bars, go over a fire escape plan and check smoke alarms.
