At next Tuesday's meeting of the Burke Mountain Naturalists, retired UBC professor Ken Hall will give a slide presentation on the importance of water in the desert.

Water? In the desert?

Yes and Hall's photographic tour on April 10 will start in the deserts of the south Okanagan, travel down through Washington State and into the southern deserts of California and Arizona. He will explore the plants and wildlife in and around the oxbow ponds north of Osoyoos Lake, the Coulee lakes of central Washington State and the ephemeral streams and springs in the Arizona mountains. Along the way, Hall, an environmental chemist with more than 40 years of experience in research on water quality and land use, will explain how the unique watery habitats in these arid landscapes attract abundant wildlife and provide important migratory corridors.

The Burke Mountain Naturalists meeting is free to attend and all are welcome. It will be held at 7:30 p.m. next Tuesday in the hall of Como Lake United Church, on the corner of Marmont Street and King Albert Avenue in Coquitlam. A donation to the church food bank is appreciated.
