Raised in Port Coquitlam and ready for a journey

Hyde Creek volunteers need help to release their coho salmon at April 21 event
Hyde Creek
You can help the Hyde Creek Watershed Society in Port Coquitlam move thousands of salmon, one bucket at a time, into Hyde Creek Saturday, April 21

It’s that time of year again when we venture out to the forests and streams to see the wonders of nature.

This spring is no exception as the Hyde Creek Watershed Society holds its annual fish release and open house Saturday, April 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Kids and adults can don raincoats and rubber boots for a day in the woods next to the creek at 3636 Coast Meridian Rd., Port Coquitlam.

Society members have spent 18 months raising coho from eggs through to fry and smolt stages, and these coho are now ready to travel to the ocean. This is your chance to carry a bucket of salmon from the hatchery to the creek, where you will release them and send them on their journey to the ocean.

While you’re at the hatchery, you can visit the education centre and have a tour with one of the volunteer members. Exhibits and crafts are part of the day, along with a fundraising hot dog barbecue.

Parking is available at the Hyde Creek rec centre on Laurier Avenue. It’s a short walk west along the Traboulay PoCo Trail to the Hyde Creek Education Centre and Hatchery.
