Salmon Leave Home at Hoy Creek on May 1

Kids can release coho smolts into Hoy Creek on Sunday in Coquitlam.

It will not be “Goodbye” but “Until we meet again” at the Salmon Leave Home event Sunday, May 1 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hoy Creek Hatchery in Coquitlam.

This free annual event is held to celebrate the release of coho smolts. Activities take place in and around the hatchery, where the public is invited to help release coho smolts into the creek. Visitors can build mason bee houses and bird houses and enjoy music provided by CKPM FM and guest artist Etienne Dew. There will also be refreshments provided by the Hoy-Scott Watershed Society, frozen treats available from Rocky Point Ice Cream and volunteers will provide tours and information about the salmon enhancement program.

The Hoy Creek Hatchery is located on Hoy Creek Trail, west of City Centre Aquatic Complex. For more information, visit www.hoyscottcreeks.org.
