Soroptimist International of the Tri-Cities has been improving the lives of women and girls for more than 15 years and, with the help of the Coquitlam Foundation, it has launched a new fund.

The fund will provide assistance to women and girls in the Tri-Cities. Bursaries and scholarships from the fund will support educational programs, skills development and career training, and grants will also be provided to support women and girls suffering from poverty or homelessness, or requiring shelter. As well, financial assistance will be given to support programs that educate, empower and enable women and girls in the area of health and wellness and protection against domestic violence.

Janet Toddington, chair of the Coquitlam Foundation board, announced the creation of the fund Feb. 28 at Soroptimists' Give Her Wings Gala in Port Moody.

"We are very pleased the Soroptimists have given us the opportunity to manage and help build this important fund," Toddington said in a press release. "We look forward to seeing the fruits of the Soroptimists' good work in the years to come."
