'NUCKS VISIT
The Dana family of Port Coquitlam, whose house burned down this month, got signed jerseys and gear - as well as some words of support - from Canucks' Alex Burrows and Ryan Kesler during a VIP event last Friday at Metro Ford Motors, which the two forwards represent. Jamie, 12, Melissa, 15, parents Kristie and Ron, and son Jeff, 18, who are now living in a hotel, were thrilled to meet the NHL star players.
LITTLE BIZ
Maya and Alex Bajcic and Zyannah Rahemtulla and Cally Yeung sold their handmade wares last month as part of the Montgomery middle's entrepreneur fair. The Dec. 13 event at the Coquitlam school saw students sell such items as baked goods, pot holders and electronic device cases to fundraise for the Red Cross typhoon relief fund. More than $800 was collected for the cause, said Grade 8 student Calvin Choi who is involved with the Me 2 We Club, an official group representing Free the Children.
CASH FOR CROSROADS
The Running Room in Port Coquitlam this month relayed $1,000 over to the Crossroads Hospice Society as part of the business' 2013 Resolution Run.
EXPERIMENT
Beaver Scouts with 10th Coquitlam tested the sound of music last week as part of a national pilot program. The Science Technology Engineering Math - or STEM - finds ways for the kids, aged five to seven, to experiment.
MONEY FOR ARTS
A gala last Saturday to raise money for the expansion of the Port Moody Arts Centre netted $25,000 for the project. Art4U at Westwood Plateau Golf and Country Club also saw donations of $30,000 each from SunCor Energy and Canadian Pacific Rail. SHE'S A KEEPER
A student at Port Moody's Heritage Mountain elementary was recognized by police this week for being the only youth in the province to win the RCMP Name the Foal contest.Maria Dzevitski picked "Keeper" for one of the six foals born last year at the RCMP Breeding Farm in Pakenham, Ont. The name was chosen by the RCMP Musical Ride branch out of thousands of entries across Canada. Port Moody Mayor Mike Clay, the city's chief constable Chris Rattenbury and Coquitlam RCMP Supt. Claude Wilcott were at the school on Wednesday to present a prize to Dzevitski. The other contest winning names are: Kruzer, Kenya, Kofi, Karma and Kasper.
