Dave McCloskey and Jordan Birch of the Now That's Ugly Society were at Coquitlam city council on Monday to proclaim Dec. 20 as Ugly Christmas Sweater Day.

The pair recently helped to launch the first Ugly Sweater Run at Coquitlam's Lafarge Lake and, on Thursday, spoke to the Tri-Cities' Chamber of Commerce about their aim to raise money for the Children's Wish Foundation of Canada.

Ugly Sweater Day on Dec. 20 will include an annual Ugly Christmas Sweater Party at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver. Visit nowthatsugly.com.

BUSINESS WIN

A Coquitlam company last month scored a win at the 2013 BC Export Awards gala.

N.I.I. Northern International Inc. took home the consumer products accolade from the Nov. 15 event in Vancouver.

Founded in 1997 in Steven Gula's basement, N.I.I. is a designer, manufacturer, marketer and distributor of consumer lighting products including patented flameless candles and residential-use outdoor lighting products. It has offices in Coquitlam, Toronto and Montreal, with 170 employees.

ROTARY DRIVE

Port Coquitlam's Centennial Rotary Club raised a record amount of food and cash during a drive at Save-On-Foods last weekend. The Generous Hearts campaign for the Share food bank brought in 3,665 pounds of food and $592 at the Ottawa Street store.


POLICE MEDAL

A Port Moody police officer was bestowed with an award for meritorious service at last month's honours night.

Insp. Brad Sheridan was presented with the medal for his work on the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team in arresting a suspected killer.

UNWRAPPED

Thousands of holiday revellers enjoyed a night of charitable shopping last month during the annual Unwrapped event at Coquitlam Centre.

Sponsored in part by The Tri-City News, more than $60,000 was raised at the Nov. 26 party, including $11,692 for Share Family and Community Services that runs the food bank and the holiday hamper program.

Participants also dined, and took part in numerous promotions, make-overs and demonstrations.

RCH DONATION

Baxter's Leslie Foord and Kevin McKim recently handed over $10,000 to the Royal Columbian Hospital, which serves the Tri-Cities.

The company donation, which was given to Dr. Gerald Da Roza, Fraser Health's nephrology director, and RCH foundation president and CEO Adrienne Bakker, is for the facility's urgent needs campaign.

FOX AT WORK

Some 50 leadership students at Port Coquitlam's Terry Fox secondary served up a hot lunch and warm clothing to people living in Vancouver's downtown eastside recently.
