SD43 LEADER

Coquitlam school district's assistant superintendent/director of international education recently won a nod for her work in the field.

Patricia Gartland gained the recognition at a BC Council for International Education summer seminar, clinching the 2012 BBCIE International Education Distinguished Leadership Award.

"This award recognizes the unique and important accomplishments and contributions of an international educator or member of the community who has effected change and leadership in the field of international education, and whose work will have a lasting impact," said Kerry Pridmore, director of international education for the ministry of Education, Governance and Independent Schools division, in presenting Gartland with the accolade.

At the event, Education minister George Abbott also singled out Coquitlam as a leader in international education in B.C - a remark also echoed by Ivy Lerner Frank, first secretary for the high commission for Canada in India.

AVIA OPENS

Above, staff at Avia Employment Services recently cut a ribbon to open their official WorkBC Employment Service Centre in Port Coquitlam.

The event also drew PoCo Coun. Mike Forrest and Coquitlam-Burke Mountain MLA Doug Horne, said business development project manager Ana Ciampi.

CROSSROADS CASH

Two Tri-City organizations recently handed over cheques to the Port Moody-based Crossroads Hospice Society.

The Coquitlam Kinsmen - including former Coquitlam mayor Jon Kingsbury - donated $7,000 to the society as part of the annual Hike for Hospice contribution while Car Tunes Sound & Cellular revved in nearly $1,000, collected through its May 27 charity car show.
