SPOTLIGHT: Ballet awards and Cannes Film Festival

A young ballerina studying at Coquitlam's Place des Arts is twirling in more awards for her dance. Jeannine Haller, who is instructed by Lucienne Anczykowski at the Maillardville facility, recently won first place at the Peak Invitational for open pointe (ages 13-15) as well as the top prize in her age group for her set piece, open pointe and interpretive dance at the Surrey Festival of Dance. As well, she clinched second place for her variation on pointe number. Haller will be awarded the Surrey Festival of Dance trophy for most promising ballet student. Haller has been accepted to the National Ballet School summer program.

OFF TO CANNES

A Port Moody secondary graduate will see the film he's in debut at the famed Cannes Film Festival this month in France. Reid Morgan plays Derek Lessing, a character who designs a virus that kills the protagonist, in Brandon Cronenberg's movie called Antiviral.

JAMMIN'

A fundraiser at a Coquitlam pub last Friday poured in more than $7,000 for the Share food bank. Blues for Food at Rhino's Pub on Clarke Roadsaw a number of musicians get on stage for the cause, including Mayor Richard Stewart who played piano. Coquitlam Coun. Brent Asmundson and Port Moody Coun. Diana Dilworth were also on hand.

REEL GOOD

Four Tri-City residents have spun in awards from the 17th annual EyeLens Film, Video and Animation Festival. Clayton Dowdell took a prize for I'm A Gamer while Brietta Stewart, Brownwyn Henderson and Paige Smith won for Carver is a Ten. The festival that celebrates emerging filmmakers in B.C. was held on April 21.

SMART KIDS

Several School District 43 Odyssey of the Mind teams are eligible to participate in the world finals after winning a provincial tournament last month. The Odyssey team from Port Coquitlam's Maple Creek middle won for Ooh Motional (vehicle performance) while Port Moody secondary took Weird Science (technical performance) as well as To Be or Not To Be (classics performance) and You Make the Call (balsa wood structure performance). Meanwhile, teams from PoCo's Citadel middle and Pinetree secondary in Coquitlam won in their categories for the Odyssey Angels (humorous performance.) Over the next few weeks, these teams will be fundraising and looking for corporate sponsorship to assist with travel expenses to Iowa State U. For more information, email cpss.ca@gmail.com.
