GREEN HELPERS

Grade 3 students in Carrie Vendramin and Linda Appleby's classes at Lord Baden-Powell elementary took to the streets last week to get a lesson in social responsibility. The Coquitlam school is part of the Adopt-A-Street program and the two teachers plan to head out every month to clean up the school surroundings.

PCT CASH

Ken Catton, vice-president and general manager of Port Moody's Pacific Coast Terminals, with the company's new scholarship winners: Grade 12 students Devon Koerber (Port Moody secondary); Mikayla Tinsley (PMSS); and Michaela Slinger (Heritage Woods secondary) each received $1,000 from the Port Metro Vancouver terminal operator to help them with the costs of their post-secondary education. "We have so much pride for our community and are happy to give back every year through our scholarship program," Catton said in a news release.

FOR ALEXA

Four Coquitlam Mounties have been named to the Alexa's Team. Constables Quentin Frewing, Raj Uppal, Dave Lally and Matthew Saikali are part of the group named after Alexa Middelaer, who was killed by a drunk driver in 2008. The four officers were nominated for the team based on their efforts to remove impaired drivers from the road last year. "Their action exemplified the tireless efforts of police officers at the Coquitlam detachment in making our roads the safest. It's great to see them get recognized," said Sgt. Dave Fee in a news release.

SLAMMIN' POEMS

Port Moody secondary's Ralph Aguila, Jean Lee, Jacob Gebreworld and Lindsey Palmer were last week named the provincial youth poetry slam champions. Team Words Worth Wording scooped the Billy Sharkspeare trophy after besting 14 other groups in the third annual Hullabaloo BC Spoken Word Festival contest in Vancouver.

BENEFIT SHOW

Gio Levy played guitar while Gentleman's Vibe worked the microphones at the Splash benefit concert last weekend. Proceeds from the April 6 event at Coquitlam's Evergreen Cultural Centre, which also saw performances from Accent, Greentree and The Faceplants, are being donated to World Vision for drilling a well in Kenya.
