BREAKING GROUND

Port Moody Mayor Mike Clay joined MP James Moore - Canada's minister of industry - and arts leader Ann Kitching last Saturday for a groundbreaking ceremony at the Port Moody Arts Centre. PMAC will expand its St. John's Street facility by linking with a heritage home. A $200,000 fundraising campaign was launched last month to build a connecting atrium between PMAC and the Centennial Appleyard House. Other dignitaries at the soil turning included MP Fin Donnelly and MLA Linda Reimer; the shovel was decorated by PMAC instructor Agata Teodorovicz.

NEW TV SHOW

Port Moody crooner Frankie Cena was with host Ria Jade for last month's launch of the eveRIAthing television show on Shaw. Cena, who also models for American Eagle, and Jade have performed together and, in August, they made it to the finalists' round of Simon Cowell's You Generation group competition. Meanwhile, Cena will appear her Monday, Oct. 7 episode, titled Staying Competitive. Also pictured at the premiere are Treenee Lopez and Miss World Canada 2012 Tara Teng. EveRIAthing is on Shaw channel 116 on Mondays at 9:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m.

ALL FOR SHARE

A joint operation by the Port Moody Police Department and the Coquitlam RCMP hauled in more than 1,200 pounds of non-perishable food for families in need. The two forces also raised $150 for the Share food bank, located at 2615 Clarke St. Meanwhile, two Grade 11 students have been congratulated for their volunteer work at the Share food bank. Kiera Allen and Shannon Kennedy were at the facility last week to bag and clean up - and the girls got a special visit from the Share Care Bear for their efforts, spokesperson Maria Pichichero said.

RCH DONATION

Officials at the Royal Columbian Hospital, which serves the Tri-Cities, last month accepted a $19,312 donation from Telus employees. Company rep Larry Kozak presented the cheque to RCH foundation president and CEO Adrienne Bakker and board director Meldy Harris. Meanwhile, the hospital is gearing up for Donation Day on Tuesday, Oct. 8. Radio stations 93.7 JRFM, 102.7 The Peak, RJ1200 and RimJhim will be broadcasting live from RCH to raise funds for the facility. To contribute, call 604-310-4000 or visit rchcares.com.

ART WORK

Students at Riverside secondary are enjoying a new art installation inside the Port Coquitlam school. Teacher-librarian Sue Kilpatrick said the artwork, titled Adventures through the Real and Imagined World - which was inspired by the UK street artist Phlegm - spans above two locker banks on the upper floor. The large-scale collaboration involved 35 art students in Grades 9 to 12.

LEED-ERS

A Coquitlam store has achieved LEED certification, a top environmental standard in building. Target, which has an outlet in Coquitlam Centre mall (2929 Barnet Hwy.), now has the designation at 68 of its newly launched stores in Canada. LEED certification requires audits in sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

gobble up

A BC Thanksgiving Food Drive that happened last month in Coquitlam collected nearly 8,000 pounds of non-perishable food for Share. The provincial-wide event brought in more than 400,000 pounds of food for 50 food banks. The local BCTFD event in Coquitlam was sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and was joined by many friends and family volunteers.

WIN-WIN

Coquitlam city hall rounded up two significant awards at last month's Union of BC Municipalities' convention. The city was one of seven municipalities to win a $10,000 grant for being "Open for Business." Meanwhile, the city was also named the provincial winner of best practices in civic engagement.
