TO MT. K. AND BEYOND

Several seniors who are members of Coquitlam's Dogwood Pavilion were recognized at Monday's city council meeting for climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro. The 17 climbers, aged 60 to 74, trained for the February excursion by hiking the Grouse Grind, Manning Park and Burnaby Mountain to SFU as well as cycling 70 km. Mayor Richard Stewart had given the group a Coquitlam flag to take to the summit.

NEW PLAYGROUND

Students and staff at Coquitlam's Mundy Road elementary were joined by Mayor Richard Stewart, city councillors and school district officials for the opening of a new school playground. The old 20-year-old wooden playground was torn down because it didn't meet current safety codes.

Fire chief Tony Delmonico and Maurice Gravelle, Coquitlam's general manager of strategic initiatives, received the awards at Monday's city council meeting. The 8,600-square foot expansion, which was completed in December 2010, got the nod from the Fire Industry Equipment Research Organization and the Fire Chief Magazine.
