The foundation at Royal Columbian Hospital, which serves the Tri-Cities, has been busy accepting donations recently for medical gear. Dr. Cedric Ho, RCH's head of anesthesiology, and foundation president and CEO Adrienne Bakker received $68,000 from Jackie Lee-Son and Dr. William Ibbott of the Mr. and Mrs. P.A. Woodward's Foundation for a diagnostic ultrasound imaging system. And members of the New Westminster Shrine Club #8 joined foundation board members and hospital staff for the presentation of $7,068, which will go towards buying a new phototherapy light for newborns with jaundice. Since 1989, the Shrine club has given more than $266,240 in support of care for the hospital's babies. Meanwhile, the foundation also scooped $15,000 from Mainland Sand & Gravel Ltd.

MOTHER EARTH

Students at Coquitlam's École Banting middle school competed in a science Oscar party last week - and created some interesting designs. Youth in 7up North have been studying earth science, focusing on earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis. In an attempt to link the project to real life jobs in science, student teacher Denise Galuska had them present a two-minute advertisement for their perfect neighbourhood.

GO TEAM!

Four Special Olympians made their way through the Tri-Cities last Thursday and got a boost to their athletic endeavours at this summer's games. Adam Advocaat, Renee Girard, Amanda Manzardo and Andrew Wiseman were welcomed at Spirit Square in Coquitlam during the Law Enforcement Torch Run and presented with cheques. The $5,000 in sponsorships was made possible with donations from the Coquitlam RCMP, Riverside community church, Gleneagle secondary, Port Coquitlam Lions' Club, PriceSmart Foods (Pinetree Village), McDonald's (Barnet Highway), Walmart (Port Coquitlam), Safeway (Sunwood Square) and the auxiliary constable program.

RUBBER POWER

A recycled rubber floor is now in the workout room at the Port Moody recreation complex thanks in part to a grant from Tire Stewardship BC. The new environmentally friendly, cushioning mats that are helpful to gym users of all abilities and ages are being praised by Port Moody Mayor Mike Clay. "They tell us it feels much better to work out on the new floor than the previous concrete surface," he said in a news release. " Tire Stewardship BC awards matching funds up to $30,000 to cities, schools and non-profit groups that want to employ B.C. recycled rubber as part of their projects such as playgrounds, sidewalks, trails, athletic grounds and synthetic turf fields. The organization is now accepting applications for 2013 grants. Visit www.tirestewardshipbc.ca.

BIZ STUDENT

A Coquitlam resident and SFU business student has won a scholarship from Export Development Canada. Scott Hirsch is one of 30 students in the country to win the accolade. Under its scholarship program, EDC awards cash to outstanding students in the field of international business and those who have combined business and environmental studies.
