CHAMBER WINS
The Tri-Cities most successful businesses and the leaders who make them great were honoured last Saturday evening at a gala dinner and awards night at the Hard Rock Casino in Coquitlam.
TheBusiness Excellence Awards, hosted by the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce, recognized the success, innovation and passion of three local businesses as well as the contributions of an important non-profit organization and the leadership of two prominent Tri-City business leaders.
The chamber award winners are:
Small Business of the Year: Butter Media Inc.;
Business of the Year (10 to 50 employees): Cap's Westwood Cycle;
Business of the Year (50-plus employees): Metro Motors;
Community Spirit Award: Greg Garrison, Mardon Insurance Brokers (Coquitlam) Inc.;
Not-for-Profit of the Year: Crossroads Hospice Society;
Business Leader of the Year: Wim Vander Zalm, Art Knapp Plantland and Florist.
As well, the chamber recognized Mark Pettie of Pettie Insurance and Financial Services as Chamber Member of the Year.
JUNO BOUND
Tyler Shaw, a 2011 graduate of Port Coquitlam's Riverside secondary, now has a Juno award nomination to his credit.
A sociology undergrad at the University of PEI, Shaw was shortlisted this week for Breakout Artist of the Year. In 2012, the singer won the MuchMusic Covers Contest.
CARNEGIE HALL
Coquitlam pianist Angela Hu will perform in New York City's prestigious Carnegie Hall this month after winning the Crescendo International Piano Competition last December in Vancouver.
Hu is a student of Donna Fishwick, who will also see three of her pupils, including Hu, receive gold medals from the Royal Conservatory of Music next month at the Chan Centre for their high exam marks.
TUITION $
Port Coquitlam's Po-Wen Huang scored $1,500 in scholarships from the University of Alberta last month.
Huang is a first-year bachelor of management student at the Augustana campus in Camrose and won the Kroeger Joyce Chartered Accountants Scholarship as well as the Augustana Non-Alberta Incentive Entrance Award.
GALA SUCCESS
The first annual gala hosted by Dancing 4 a Change in Port Moody last weekend brought in about $6,500.
Proceeds from the fundraiser for Women of Value go to help girls and young women who have been sexually abused or exploited.
BRACELET
The Fraser North Child & Youth Eating Disorder Team in Port Moody sported Love Our Bodies, Love Ourselves wristbands as part of the Provincial Eating Disorders Awareness (PEDAW) campaign Wristband Challenge.
The campaign is a province-wide effort to raise awareness around prevention and early intervention of eating disorders as well as media literacy, resiliency, building healthy body image and self-esteem. Email [email protected] for a bracelet.
