The Tri-City Chinese Community Society had a sold-out crowd at the Hard Rock Casino Vancouver theatre in Coquitlam last week to rein in the Year of the Horse.
Organized by volunteers, the group's fourth annual celebration for the Chinese new year was sponsored in part with a Spirit gaming grant from the city of Coquitlam. Spokesperson Shirley Xin said the cultural and heritage event was attended by civic and provincial officials.
BUILDING SCHOOLS
Kwayhquitlum middle students with the Me to We club recently collected $1,475 - in five days - to help build schools in third-world countries.
Leader Coco Chen said the 24-member group at the Port Coquitlam school brought in the cash through its We Create Change challenge.
"Our group sacrificed lunches for the meetings and put their heart and soul into making this initiative successful," Chen said.
TRAIL CONTEST
The Tri-Cities Off-Road Cycling Association has been accepted into a grant contest to better a regional trail.
TORCA, a group that partners with governments and land managers to create accessible trails, is up against other non-profit organizations in Western Canada to get the $10,000 windfall. The contest is sponsored by Mountain Equipment Co-Op.
