JAVA TIME

Students of Coquitlam's Queen of All Saints school had a boost to their coffee drive last month when Mayor Richard Stewart and Coun. Terry O'Neill showed up. The "farewell" fundraiser was hosted by the Grade 7 class, with the java donated by Port Moody's Gallagher's Coffee Bar.

36 YEARS STRONG

Eagle Ridge Hospital Auxiliary marked its 36th year last month by serving cake and hot beverages to staff and visitors in the main entrance way at the Port Moody facility. Since it started in 1976, auxiliary members have given about 250,000 volunteer hours plus $800,000 for equipment and patient comfort items.

NICE SHIRT

A number of students from Port Coquitlam's Blakeburn elementary were recognized recently for their artistic work in helping to create a t-shirt for the school's anti-bullying campaign. The student-driven project, which received more than 100 ideas for the design, was led by teachers and principal Jane Kruks. Three of this year's winners follow in the footsteps of their older siblings - Kalen Dofher, Roy Marshall and Ariana Dudley - who headed up the same effort a few years ago.

PIANO GIRL

A young Coquitlam piano player clinched a near perfect mark in her Royal Conservatory of Music exam. Angela Hu, seven, gained 99% for Grade 2 and took a gold medal, which she will receive in April at the Chan Centre at UBC. Hu, a member of the Donna Fishwick Piano Ensemble, started piano with Keitha Campeau and has won many awards. Five of Fishwick's other students also earned gold medals in their RCM exams last year.

HAPPY 45

A Coquitlam printing firm is now rolling out with its 45th anniversary celebrations. Started in 1967, Ampco Manufacturers began as Ad-Print Marking Ltd. and has since expanded to 100 employees, producing more than $15 million a year out of its 63,000-square foot facility. Ampco (www.ampcomfg.com) was recently named a regional finalist in Canada's 50 Best Managed Companies national competition.
